Fluorocarbon Coated Aluminum

August 30, 2023

The fluorocarbon coated aluminum sheet coil produced by Haomei Aluminum is a high end color coated aluminum product on the market with wide application. The fluorocarbon spraying process is as follows:

Pre-treatment process: degreasing and cleaning of aluminum materials → rinsing → alkaline washing (degreasing) → rinsing → acid washing → rinsing → chromating → rinsing → pure water rinsing

Spraying process: spraying primer → top coat → clear coat → baking (180-250℃) → quality inspection

The multi-layer spraying process consists of three sprayings (referred to as three sprays), which are spraying primer, top coat, and clear coat, and two sprayings (primer, top coat).

  1. The purpose of pre-treatment:

Before spraying on aluminum sheet and coil, the surface needs to be degreased, cleaned, and chemically treated to generate a chromate film, increase the adhesion and anti-oxidation ability between the coating and the metal surface, and prolong the service life of the paint film.

  1. Primer coating:

As the primer coating that seals the substrate, its purpose is to improve the coating’s resistance to penetration, enhance the protection of the substrate, stabilize the metal surface, strengthen the adhesion between the top coat and the metal surface, ensure the uniformity of the top coat’s color, and the thickness of the paint layer is generally 5-10 micrometers.

  1. Top coat:

The top coat is a critical layer in the sprayed coating. Its function is to provide the decorative color required for aluminum materials, achieve the design requirements for the appearance of aluminum materials, protect the metal surface from erosion by external environmental factors such as atmosphere, acid rain, and pollution, and prevent penetration of ultraviolet rays. It greatly enhances the aging resistance ability. The top coat is the thickest layer in the spraying process, and the thickness of the paint layer of pvdf coated aluminum is generally 23-30 micrometers.

  1. Clear coat:

The clear coat, also known as varnish coat, mainly aims to enhance the coating’s ability to resist external erosion, protect the top coat, and increase the metallic luster of the top coat’s color. The appearance becomes more vivid and eye-catching. The thickness of the coating is generally 5-10 micrometers. The total thickness of the three spray layers is generally 40-60 micrometers, and it can be increased if special requirements are needed.

  1. Curing treatment:

The three spray layers generally require secondary curing. The aluminum materials enter the curing furnace for treatment, with curing temperature generally between 180℃ and 250℃, and curing time is 15-25 minutes. Different fluorocarbon paint manufacturers will provide the best temperature and time according to their own coatings. Some fluorocarbon spraying factories based on their experience may change the two rounds of curing during the three spray process to one round of curing.

  1. Quality inspection:

Quality inspection of fluorocarbon coated aluminum should be conducted according to the standards. Only strict quality checks can ensure high-quality sprayed products.
